Moment2smile imperfections

“The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.”                                            -Joseph Campbell

“The most exhausting thing in life is being insincere.”                                    -Anne Morrow Lindbergh

“The authentic self is the soul made visible.”
-Sarah Ban Breathnach

Sometimes I think we all need reminding that people are imperfect. We all make mistakes. We are not always going to say the right thing (In fact, if you are like me, I am more likely to say the wrong thing and then think about it later of how much better it would have been if I just would have phrased it differently like George Costanza’s jerk store). We are definitely not always going to be cool. In fact as I write that, I wonder if the word cool is still cool?  Sometimes you are going to say something that sounded hilarious in your head and it will be met with awkward reactions. It happens to all of us, whether we admit it or not. Point is: that is perfectly fine. I say let us embrace our awkwardness. Get out of your own head, stop putting energy into pleasing others and put it into doing what makes you truly happy.  Laugh at your own jokes even if no one else gets it. Dance awkwardly, most people do. At least you are dancing.

Moment2smile Frog

The human voice can never reach the distance that is covered by the still small voice of conscience.
Mahatma Gandhi

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
Steve Jobs

Never give up. And most importantly, be true to yourself. Write from your heart, in your own voice, and about what you believe in.

So often we look for others to make us happy, to fill our lives when really it is the other way around. Feel love. Be love. If we love ourselves and in turn love others with the overflow, then love will follow you.

Remembering yourself

The aftermath of the mud fight

Yesterday my daughter, Myah, taught me something that I once already knew. We were out in the backyard while I was busy working on multiple things per usual when I heard giggling coming from behind the shed. And not just any giggling but the “I am doing something I am not supposed to be doing and LOVING it” giggle. You know what I am talking about. The moment that siren is sounded, I run into action half afraid of what I am going to find. As I turned the corner I find Myah rolling in the world’s largest mud puddle, or at least in the Chicagoland area. My first reaction was to get mad as there was a similar incident with a garden hose earlier in the day just as we were getting ready to leave the house. So as I step into the mud to get her, something funny happens. My foot steps down and mud oozes between my toes, and I think gross, and then I think it actually feels kind of good. When I was a kid, I used to love playing in mud puddles and all at once those memories came back and I started to hear Myah’s giggle in a different way. Not the mischievous cackle that foreshadows the huge mess I will soon be cleaning up but instead the pure joy in the act. It was as if someone turned up the volume so that I could hear the joy. So what happened next? MUD FIGHT! By the end of it, we were covered head to toe and both giggling nonstop.
