“Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.”

“Every choice you make has an end result.”

“Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice.”
-Ayn Rand

“Choose your love, Love your choice.”
-Thomas S. Monson

Every day is filled with choices: Choices about how we view situations around us, choices about what actions we will take or not take, choices on how we view other people and more importantly how we view ourselves. Those choices are where our power lies. It is in this moment right now that we have the ability to decide our direction. It is in the consistent moments that defines who we are. If a path is chosen over and over again, we begin to identify with it.

Now We all struggle with this. We make choices that we know do not help us. We choose to stay in ____________(relationships, careers, habits, beliefs) that deplete us because settling feels less scary than growing. Then there are many aspects of life that are out of our control. Something will happen that throws us off our game and we feel knocked down. We put focus on that something and next thing you know it feels like we are getting hit from all sides. When it rains it pours, right? Well Yes, life can be chaotic. There is no getting around that. However, if we choose to put our focus on the chaos, than we are looking away from what we do have control of.

Here is the trick. Look around at your life and take responsibility. Look at the choices that have influenced your current situation. Even Look at the choices that influence how you view your current situation. If you are not satisfied with the way your life is right now, than it is time to make some different choices. Start with little steps at first. You might be surprised how a few steps away from or toward your path makes a tremendous difference in how you feel. The good news is we are never too far from our path to find it again. How could you lose something that lies in you? The happier you are with your choices, the more you will feel empowered to take on bigger goals. It is a matter of listening to that quiet voice inside and then aligning your choices in life so that who you dream to be coincides with who you are. It all starts with what you choose right now.

One candle next to a mirrored background moment2smile

My brother Bob is one of my favorite people to have conversations with. We get into long in depth debates that go on way WAY past my bed time but I am so into the discussion that my adrenaline kicks in and sleep seems of little importance (I tend to have a different perspective at 6 am the next morning but that is another post) In a recent exchange, we were talking about the state of the world, you know, is it falling a part and what can we really do about it ?  We covered multiple angles, no it isn’t falling apart, yes it is, how the media and Washington play a role…blah blah blah. Again very interesting at the time but you get the picture and it is not the point I want to focus on.

We talked about how maybe we are getting to a point, a tipping scale (Malcolm Gladwell is great BTW), where yes the world is getting a bit uncalled for, but maybe it needs to get to this point so that more and more people shift, wake up from the desensitized state and say, I am making another choice.  There just has to be another way than this. We are tired of feeling disempowered because it is not our natural state. We are meant to be creators, to have impacts in this world for the better and when we have given that power up because we see no way out, than our only option is to numb the pain by escapism. It is like the tub of Haagen Daaz dulce de leche after I have been dumped. Give me a second to attempt my best Homer impression…ooooooooh dulce de leche. It is enjoyable, it tastes yummy, and it numbs my heart and gets my mind briefly off the pain. I am not knocking escapism, sometimes it is what gets us through challenging times and I love me some Keeping Up With The Kardashians & Bachelor Pad, but at some point we have to come back and deal. When is that going to be by the way? Where is your tipping point? When are you going to choose to step into your potential?

People are stepping into their power every day and shining their light. I know, I know, there is so much negativity, destruction, suffering, the POLAR BEARS are drowning and oh forget it, where is that ice cream? but WAIT. Before I lose you, Have you ever been home at night and lost power in your place? You maybe going about your business, and then all of a sudden zhooooom, it is complete darkness. You feel a bit lost in the silence and you are left awkwardly feeling around for furniture you recognize until you come to a candle. Go ahead, light it. Alright then, that one itty bitty light helps doesn’t it? It only takes one candle to shed light all over a mass of darkness. And then You light more and more all from the first flame. One candle, one light and you all have it in yourselves. Take a look at Jeremy Gilley and see what he has done with an idea he got while living in his mother’s basement. One different way of looking at things, or as my friend Kelly said, it can even be the same way of looking at something but through your voice, this time,  people really hear it. When you think about it, isn’t that how most religions start? Someone sheds light onto a new perspective, people hear it, choose it for their own, and it spreads like a wildfire. I am not suggesting that we all start new religions, although Marjonism does have a nice ring to it, but more that we recognize that we have more power than we think we have. We have the capability to make a little difference every day, to be the candle in someone else’s dark room. It is in our gifts(and we all have them) that we have a responsibility to our potential selves. Your job is to figure out your gifts, pick a direction that you feel drawn towards, step into your power and shine your light all over that sucker.                                            …Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world”

– Gandhi

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

– Marianne Williamson
